Movie Reviews - Love Breakups Zindagi

Movie Reviews - Love Breakups ZindagiStory: Jai ( Zayed Khan) and Naina ( Dia Mirza) may have chosen their respective partners, but it doesn't take long before they realise they have made the wrong choice. A friend's extended Punjabi wedding makes it even more easy for the sparks to fly between the two and bring them close to each other while their partners are busy with their worldly affairs. Will it be breakup (with their old partners), love and zindagi ever after for the twosome? Wait and watch.

Cast: Zayed Khan, Dia Mirza, Cyrus Sahukar, Tisca Chopra
Direction: Sahil Sangha
Genre: Romance
Duration: 2 hours 35 minutes

Movie Review: Wait and watch, yes. But what if the wait turns out to be endless and there isn't too much to watch since the plot keeps going round and round in repetitive circles about comings and goings between a bunch of confused people. Ironically, your patience is completely worn out by the first half, which believe it or not, is entirely used to shoot a Punjabi wedding sequence. Okay, DDLJ also used the entire second half to conduct its famous wedding, but remember, there was Shah Rukh, there was Kajol and there were lots of twists and turns in the story. Here, there's nothing, except the growing attraction between two couples: Dia Zayed and Cyrus Tisca.

Tere Mere Phere: Movie Review

'I can't stand hysterical woman', shouts the hero. 'I can't stand arrogant men', screams the heroine. Sadly realization strikes the lead couple pretty late in the film. The viewer cannot stand their sight or sound after the first ten minutes and lose hope much early in the film.

Tere Mere Phere: Movie Review

If there was ever an award for the most cacophonous couple ever, the screechy Sasha Goradia and the whining Jagrat Desai would undoubtedly win the title. The duo scream, shout, yell, yelp, moan, groan, grumble (add all possible noisy synonyms) to an extent that they could give the torchbearers of loud slapstick cinema (like Priyadarshan, Anees Bazmee) a run for their money.

Rahul (Jagrat Desai) and Pooja (Sasha Goradia) are on their Himalayan honeymoon in a travel trailer. Imagine a romantic getaway in a self-driven caravan? And by no means is this a road movie! Tere Mere Phere is a wannabe attempt on the lines of 'Vinay Pathak brand' films like Chalo Dilli or Bheja Fry 2 about an incidental journey between two strangers, their contrasting chemistry and Pathak's co-passenger being victimized by his eccentricities. Just this time, it's Vinay Pathak who is at the receiving end and the contrasting chemistry is between the married couple.

Three days since their marriage, Rahul and Pooja are at loggerheads. Jai (Vinay Pathak) is aboard their caravan in a desperate attempt to reach ladylove Muskaan (Riya Sen) before she gets married off to someone else. But Rahul and Pooja's constant bickering gets so irritating (literally) that you don't blame Jai in losing faith in the institution of marriage by the climax.

The gist of the film comes from the theory that 'men are from Mars and women are from Venus'. And so focused is the film towards its central idea that it has nothing else on show but the constant clashes between the couple. The basic flaw of the film is that it attempts to discuss a lifetime of men-woman compatibility issues merely through the course of their week-long honeymoon. Clearly it bites off more than it can chew. So their quarrels are exaggerated to the extent that it irritates you incessantly.

It's certainly not a flying start for the film, as things go terribly wrong in the very first scene, where commotion ensues on an aircraft as if it were a fish market. Hereon there's no looking back. Actor-turned-director Deepa Sahi gets the grammar of slapstick filmmaking accurate, ensuring decibel levels never go down and pandemonium persists. The consistently amateurish and deafening performances of both Sasha Goradia and Jagrat Desai only add to your trauma. Jagrat Desai also doubles up as the co-writer with Deepa Sahi to ascertain that the script is as much dull, dreary and dreadful.

The comic timing of the entire film is out-of-sync and every joke falls flat on its face. Weird as it may sound, the couple bond over common hangovers, are sexually stimulated by breaking chinaware and their verbal mudslinging turns literal by the climax. Vinay Pathak seems to be on a head-banging spree. Moreover the film runs rampant in its final reels, turning into an endless exercise. Even the tranquility of the scenic Himalayan backdrop won't help you make peace with this chaotic cinema.

Enough has been spoken about Jagrat Desai and Sasha Goradia (though not as much as they jabber in the film). Vinay Pathak has been overdoing his underplayed act. The best that Sushmita Mukherjee does is gorge on rasgullas . Co-producer Anup Jalota can't resist a (dismal) cameo. Rohan Shah irritates. Thankfully Riya Sen is in a special appearance!

Tere Mere Phere makes for a perfect anti-date film. Watch it if you dare a date with distress!

Mausam delayed, now releasing Sep 23

Much-talked about film "Mausam", which was scheduled for a Friday release, will now hit the screens across the globe Sep 23. The decision has been taken to avoid fragmented release, said Shahid Kapoor, who plays the lead role in the film.

`Mausam` delayed, now releasing Sep 23

"We are here to announce the changed release date of our film from Sep 16 to Sep 23. The reason for this is that we had applied for two permisions - a NOC (no objection certificate) from the IAF (Indian Air Force) and certification from the censor board. We got U-certificate from the censor board, but IAF gave us a conditional certificate because they wanted a 30-second scene from a particular sequence to be corrected," Shahid told reporters here Wednesday.

"They wanted a tiny little detail changed. Because the scene required computer graphics, even a small change requires a lot of time. That is why it took us so many days to make the correction. We got the NOC last (Tuesday) night," added the actor. "Mausam", a romantic film, is Shahid`s father Pankaj Kapoor`s directorial debut and in the film Shahid plays a fighter pilot and is seen "flying" a fighter.

"Today we are ready for India release on Sep 16, but we wanted the overseas release to fall on the same date. However, when we send the prints overseas, there is a particular time before which we have to send the prints. Because we got the NOC last night, we couldn`t send the overseas prints. We want the release to happen globally on the same day, so we have changed the release date to Sep 23. We don`t want a fragmented release...," said Shahid. The romantic saga will see Shahid falling in love with a Kashmiri girl, played by Sonam Kapoor.

B-Town Big Movie Review: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Movie: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin.

B-Town Big Movie Review: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
The trailers of “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” seemed to promise a rehash of “Dil Chahta Hai”. But one cannot be more wrong. Although there are some similarities, director Zoya Akhtar makes sure that she stamps her style. She has to be applauded for making one of the more intelligent movies of this decade.

Plot: Abhay Deol (as Kabir) is engaged to Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). His bachelor party is a three-week road trip in Spain with his two best friends Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) and Imran (Farhan Akhtar). How the trip changes their lives and each experiences his moment of revelation is what the movie is about

Performances: Farhan Akhtar stands out; he has the best one-liners in the movie and his comic timing is impeccable. The transformation of Arjun is beautifully portrayed as the first half cruises along, supported by some of the best writing in Hindi movies of recent times. Katrina Kaif plays a free spirit who shows Arjun how it feels to be alive. Abhay Deol finally breaks into mainstream commercial cinema, and he fits his character to a T. Nasserudin Shah makes an interesting cameo. The rugged beauty of Spain is captured in all its glory by the cinematographer Carlos Catalan.

There is not a dull moment in the movie and the chemistry between the lead actors clicks. The background score aptly captures the mood of the movie, although the songs are just about passable. Zoya's last movie, the underrated “Luck by Chance”, did not click with the audience but this movie might just be her break. Bottomline: Watch this movie for the writing, Farhan Akhtar and cinematography, in that order.

Bollywood couples and their troubled paradises

Bollywood couples and their troubled paradisesBollywood actor Vijay Raaz, who has received accolades for his performance in Aamir Khan's Delhi Belly, seems to be acting pricey, according to director Anand Kumar who was to make Zilla Ghaziabad with him.

The actor has opted out of Zila Ghaziabad barely a week before the film's first schedule.

However, Vijay's loss has proved to be a gain for Deepak Dobriyal of Omkara and Tanu Weds Manu fame. Now, he has been roped in to play the character of Fakira, who was said to be instrumental in the gang wards in Ghaziabad in the 1990s.

According to a source, "After the release of Delhi Belly, Vijay Raaz had reservations about his character. He told the director that Fakira was not doing much except running behind Prakash Fauji, essayed by Arshad Warsi and inspired by real life gangster, Mahendar Fauji. And subsequently, he opted out of the movie."

Confirming the developments, Anand said that he was shocked by Vijay's sudden volte-face. Asserting the importance of the character Deepak will now play, the director explains, "The role of Fakira in ZG is like Shakuni mama in Mahabharat. It was because of him that the gang wars between Fauji and Gujjar, played by Vivek Oberoi in the film, took place in Ghaziabad in the 1990s."

A disappointed Anand says, "So what if Delhi Belly released? Vijay is acting as if he has become Aamir Khan overnight. He should be grateful that he got that chance and should not let fame and success go to his head. Maybe he thinks he's become Aamir Khan and wants to do only lead roles now."

But the director is pleased about Deepak stepping in. "At the end of a 15-minute narration, he agreed to do the film," recalls Anand, who's gearing up to start shooting with Arshad, Vivek and Deepak from July 14. When contacted for his side of the story, all Vijay was willing to say was: "I had to opt out as the dates weren't working out."

Delhi Belly: Movie Review

Seeking its spirit from Guy Ritchie's cult classic Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), morerecently employed in Bollywood films like 99 and Sankat City, Delhi Belly polishes the crime-comedy genre by a few notches despite its unrefined ambience.

Delhi Belly: Movie Review

Three friends who share a dingy Delhi room land into trouble when a parcel of smuggled diamonds is erroneously exchanged with a stool sample. Tashi (Imran Khan), who is newly-engaged to Sonia (Shenaz Treasuryvala), rams in his car, the first gift from the in-laws, after getting into a brawl for another girl Meneka (Poorna Jagannathan). Arup (Vir Das) has just been ditched by his girlfriend for an NRI. The fatso foodie Nitin (Kunal Roy Kapoor) who is on a perpetual pooping exercise is the one responsible for all the shit that follows when an underworld don (Vijay Raaz) is behind the trio for his diamonds.

While the multiple monetary rotations in Lock Stock... (and its Indian offshoots) have been intricate, Delhi Belly doesn't complicate the tradeoffs to that extent, yet doesn't dilute on the essence of the original. Delhi Belly has a soul of its own with its unique characters and side-characters and imaginative situations. Writer Akshat Varma gets the grammar of the genre correct, evoking humour out of the most unusual situations – be it grim, gross or serious, making way for a perfect dark comedy. The language used blends with the setting and the dialogues range from the hilarious to laugh-out-loud moments. The humour is absolutely situational and, though there is a lot of mayhem, there is no space for slapstick.

Director Abhinay Deo is in as much sync with the script, never making you lose the narrative for a
moment. The pacing is quick, the milieu is authentic, the dialect is unadulterated and the characters real. The track between Tashi and Meneka is never treated as a romance track per se. Yet when they indulge in a spontaneous smooch in the pre-climax, their chemistry doesn't seem abrupt. The final shootout in stylized slow motion shots works as a tribute to Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Be it the burka-clad diamond tradeoff in a jewelry shop or a ceiling-collapsing sequence which literally brings the house down, almost every scene results into hilarity.

The art direction is apt, the cinematography is perfect and the editing is crisp. All the song videos are creatively conceptualized and choreographed, of which Vir Das' Jaa Chudail and Aamir Khan's I Hate You are pertinently placed in the film. Ram Sampat's musical score is exciting and innovative and you don't mind the fact that most songs play in the background, never interrupting the flow of the film.

Kunal Roy Kapoor gets the best scenes and best lines in the film and stands out for his perfect comic timing, amusing expressions and wacky characterization. Vir Das is as much impeccable in his comic timing and induces mirth for the helpless situations he lands himself into. Imran Khan is perfect in his part and never overshadows the other two male leads at any point. Poorna Jagannathan is confident, has immense screen presence and raw sex appeal. She reminds of actress Kitu Gidwani in terms of her looks. Vijay Raaz is in solid form after a hiatus and makes you laugh with his pokerfaced expressions.

One of the most original and entertaining comedies to have come out of Bollywood in recent times, Delhi Belly is hilarious in 'capital' letters.

Delhi Belly: You need to have the stomach for it

Delhi Belly: You need to have the stomach for itAbhinay Deo’s “Delhi Belly” isn’t your average Bollywood film. For one, it can hardly be called a Bollywood film, because the primary language isn’t Hindi, it’s English. Like most Bollywood films, this is also not a “family film”.
All those cuss words and toilet humour would be tough to endure with your parents or kids sitting next to you — with friends, it might be funny though.
And there is plenty of toilet humour and cuss words. The story, about three room-mates caught in the middle of a cross-fire thanks to a misunderstanding involving a cache of diamonds and a stool sample, is peppered with plenty of smart one-liners, spoken in the language of the demographic we call new India.
Imran Khan plays Tashi, a journalist who lives with two friends in the most run-down, filthiest room you could imagine with two room-mates — Arup, a cartoonist and Nitin, a freelance photographer, whose desire to eat some tandoori chicken off the street leads to a bad case of the Delhi Belly and sets the chain of events in motion.
As a result, a chunk of the film involves shots of Nitin (Kunaal Roy Kapur) straining himself on a toilet accompanied by all kinds of sounds. I don’t know why this toilet humour should be funny if we find the same kind of toilet humour in an Anees Baazmee film repelling. After a while it gets to you.
That apart, the script is a strong one, and writer Akshat Varma manages to keep you engaged in his story. There is a sub-plot of a romance between Tashi and a spunky journalist played by actress Poorna Jagannathan, which is interesting.
To narrate any more of the story would be unfair to the film. This is more about the journey than the destination. There are several memorable characters in the film, including the trio’s landlord, and Vijay Raaz, who plays the crook hunting down the trio.
Of the performances, Raaz and Jagannathan impress, standing out among the others. Imran Khan is subdued, but effective and Vir Das brings just the right degree of sarcasm to his funny dialogues, making you laugh out loud.
After the disastrous “Game”, director Abhinay Deo redeems himself somewhat. This isn’t a brilliant film, but it is one that will make you laugh and enjoy the ride. If you can get past all the shit, that is.

Ayesha Takia act in Nagesh Kukunoor''s first love story

When we thought Ayesha Takia has bid adieu to Bollywood, she is back with Nagesh Kukunoor's first love story Mod. Nagesh has always made off beat films like Aashayein, Iqbal and Dor but now he wants to experiment with a love story. It is a love story between Ayesha and Rannvijay Singh. Interestingly, the director decided to go ahead and shoot it completely before even letting people know what he is up to.
Ayesha Takia act in Nagesh Kukunoor's first love story
Talking about the film Nagesh candidly says, " I never wanted to do love stories as I always believed there was nothing really new to say, considering we see so many love stories being made every year. But when I saw a Taiwanese film Keeping Watch at AFFF, where I was a member of the jury, I was amazed. I wanted to take the same premise and set it in India. So I went ahead and bought the rights. I still maintain that every story has been told but it is the way a story is told that matters."The director claims that the audience will see the beauty of Ooty in the film like never before. The film is slated to release in September, 2011.

The hot ‘n’ sexy, Mallika Sherawat, who took the boldness quotient to another level with her sexy avatar It's a war: Murder vs Murder 2in Murder, a few years back, did make a statement in those times. I am not a method actor: Amitabh Bachchan

He might be 69, but he's surely not the Bbuddah of Bollywood. The man who made his mark in the industry as the 'Angry Young Man' is back with the same image, after a gap of 40 years, with his forthcoming movie Bbuddah...Hoga Tera Baap.

I am not a method actor: Amitabh Bachchan

What is this film all about?
My character in the film is called Viju, he's an ex-gangster from the city. As far as his character is concerned, he's flamboyant, arrogant and edgy, but at the same time, he is a very cool and relaxed kind of a guy. He's been living in Paris and runs his own clubs. Until he's called back to Mumbai for a mission. It's a lighthearted entertainment film; there's song, dance, humour and action. It covers everything I've done in the past, except that there's a difference of almost 40 years!

Would you term this film as a complete action film?
Everybody calls Deewaar an action film when there was just one fight scene in it (Laughs). It's about one's perception. It does, however, have all the elements of a commercial film.

Did you have any inhibitions about the audience accepting you in this avatar?
I would rather pay more attention to the script, to the maker, to my own role and then worry about what the audience thinks. There have been few instances in the past where I have gone wrong. When I did Nishabd and RGV'S Aag, people didn't watch the films purely because my roles were negative and they can't imagine me doing something like that. While I enjoyed those roles, I think these factors do count. As an actor, I will have a desire to play many diverse roles but sometimes when I do something against the audience's temperament, they do get disturbed.

How necessary is it for an actor to relate to the kind of roles he plays?
There are two different schools of thought as far as acting is concerned. Either you go through the methodology of method acting where you believe that you are in the character you are playing. And then you are reminded of this fantastic instance from the film Marathon Man where Laurence Olivier said to Dustin Hoffman "You should try acting, my boy. It's much easier". I don't know how to get into method acting. There were few occasions in my earlier films when I perhaps tried something like that, but it didn't work out.

Do you think the information overload about films during releases creates fatigue for viewers and readers?
The medium of communication has increased and everybody wants to use it. Earlier, it was only restricted to advertisements on screen-paper and hand-painted posters. Today, a destiny of a film is revealed within six hours after its release. With all due respect, none of the films are remembered more than a week or two later. It's the rapidity with which communication is increasing that's changing the way we think. Today, viewers don't want to hear two-page dialogues, one line is enough.

What are your views on escapist cinema?
I went abroad for the first time in 1973 and since then Hindi cinema has been described as escapist. I feel (pauses) irritated. I want our country to be known as a developed nation. And often enough, everywhere you go, everybody in the west will pronounce our language in a manner that is convenient to them. It is always a comparison to somebody in their hemisphere. They call Shahrukh Khan the Brad Pitt of India. Why should they? He is the Shahrukh Khan. Period. Tumhara hoga yaar koi Brad Pitt, humko kya maloom. Usko bolo ki India mein aake Chinchpokli mein ghume, koi pehchaanega bhi nahi (You may have a Brad Pitt, we don't know. Tell him to walk on the streets in India, nobody would even recognise him). I hate the word 'Bollywood' but now since it's been registered in the Oxford dictionary, I guess, we're stuck with it.

How do you keep yourself updated on the internet?
When people respond to me on twitter, blog, etc. and if I do not understand a particular word, I ask Abhishek (Bachchan) and he guides me through it. You know young people use words like "LOL and ROFL". Kabhi kabhi toh pata nahi chalta ki yeh bol kya rahe hai (sometimes I do not understand what they are saying). And I need to be updated because if tomorrow somebody writes to me like this, I want to make sure he/she is not abusing me (Smiles).

And how is the grandfather-to-be feeling at the moment?
There is a feeling of continuity as my grandson/daughter is going to be a 'Bachchan'

Why are Ranveer and Anushka fighting?

Why are Ranveer and Anushka fighting?
One just heard actor Ranveer Singh say loudly, "Oh I am so stressed." Not once but twice as he tried to get into a lift to go to his room at a Bollywood awards function in Toronto. Sources said that he had a showdown with his rumoured actor girlfriend Anushka Sharma yet again. Yes, apparently the couple keeps fighting continuously and patch up even faster.

"The reason was simple. Ranveer and Anushka came in separately and there was a lot of stress during rehearsals because Anushka was not prepared. She felt that she could have got a day extra to prepare if Ranveer would have arrived on time. So, they had a brief argument regarding that," says a source.

Anushka also apparently didn't like the fact that Ranveer tried bonding a little with actor Sonakshi Sinha who was performing with him. It may be recalled that Sonakshi had openly said that she has a crush on Ranveer. "Sonakshi's body language was not that of a shy or reserved girl. She was talking to Ranveer quite openly and didn't care whether Anushka was around or not. Anushka, on the other hand, was just left standing in a corner," says another onlooker.

Finally, while Sonakshi matched steps with Ranveer, Anushka bowed out because she felt she was too unprepared for the performance. "We could see that they were not talking properly to each other and Ranveer was unusually stressed out. That is the reason when he got out of the rehearsals; he just headed back to his car to go the hotel and didn't even stop to sign an autograph, which is very unlike him. He was the same guy who sang and danced with his fans when he landed at the airport. He also kissed a girl on her cheek when she requested him," the onlooker adds.

Ranveer incidentally tried to make up with Anushka on the stage itself, when he and Anushka were both awarded the best couple on screen. He said, "Thank you Anushka for making me so hot!" That was apparently the only time Anushka smiled at him.

First Look: Miral Review

First Look: Miral ReviewFirst Look: Miral Review: As part of the Chicago Palestine Film Festival, filmmaker Julian Schnabel and writer Rula Jebreal were in town last night for a screening of their new film Miral. It's the kind of movie that garners buckets of senseless political backlash, a lot of it from people who have never even seen it and have no intention of doing so. Well, we saw it and found it unexpectedly moving.

Based on Jebreal's autobiographical novel, the movie tells the story of Miral, born to a deeply troubled woman as the result of rape. After her mother takes her own life Miral grows up at Dar Al-Tifel Institute, an orphanage for Palestinian children in Jerusalem. Her adopted father, a kind-hearted cleric, tries to understand and support her even as she becomes a restless teenager. Awakening to the suffering of her people and not content to just wait for things to get better, her increasing political involvement begins to get her in hot water.

As in his other films, such as Before Night Falls and especially The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Schnabel focuses on giving the viewer a very subjective personal experience mirroring the journey of the characters onscreen. Vivid, almost hallucinogenic colors, tilt-shift photography, and rough handheld camerawork are used at various moments to lend palpable textures, without ever overwhelming the central story.

Ajay has never taken an interest in promoting his lead heroines. With Kajal, he feels that there needs to be a proper strategy in place to help launch her in B-Town.

A source said, "Ajay has worked with newcomers before but has never shown so much enthusiasm and excitement. He now feels that one needs to be more aggressive than before. Also, he doesn't want to hide Kajal from the media."The plan is to have her involved in the publicity campaign right from the beginning rather than introducing her at a later stage.

"Kajal has worked in the south and is quite a popular face. Ajay feels that she needs to get better branding. She impressed the actor during Singham's Goa schedule. Rumours were doing the rounds that the actress might even get to feature in a song in the next Golmaal film," the source added.
